Toliara, gateway to the south-west

A city that opens several directions. Toliara lies on the Mozambique Channel, where the town, the Vezo coast and roads inland meet. It can be a place for a market, a rickshaw ride or a meal; it is also the right place to decide whether the next part of a stay leads to the sea, dry forests or high plateaux.

North and south, two ways of reaching the coast. Towards Ifaty, Mangily and Ranobe Bay, the coast combines villages, lagoon and spiny forest. Towards Anakao, crossings and sea outings depend on the day’s conditions. These places are not interchangeable: the choice depends on whether a beach moment, a village encounter or a nature outing matters most.

Inland, the RN7 changes the scale of the journey. The road gradually links the dry south-western landscapes to the highlands and Isalo. It is best prepared as an itinerary, with stages and conditions to check, rather than as a simple day trip from town.

Choose a base rather than collecting stops. A short stay can remain centred on Toliara and its surroundings. With more time, it is more coherent to choose one main direction — Ranobe, Anakao or the RN7 — and leave room for change.
